The mysterious promo, which is currently being shown at screenings of the Transformers movie in US cinemas, shows a group of glamorous New Yorkers enjoying a party before a fireball hits the city, destroying the Statue of Liberty.
The movie has been dubbed 'Cloverfield', but Paramount Pictures has insisted that the name is merely a working title for the secret project.
The film's script is believed to have been written by Lost's supervising producer Drew Goddard, while Matt Reeves, who previously worked with Abrams on cult US drama series Felicity, is said to be directing.
The mysterious movie is expected to be released early next year.
