Harry Potter breaks box office records

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has beaten box office records on its opening night and scored the largest Wednesday opening of all time.

The fifth instalment in the franchise took an estimated £22.1 million from 4,181 locations, making it the fifth largest sales in movie history.

The film also took a massive £15 million from foreign box offices and became France's second ever highest opening day with £3 million in sales.

The film will hit 4,285 venues in the US today, the highest number since this year's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

Transformers has continued to rake in viewers but looks set to move into second place in box office sales.

Order of the Phoenix replaced Warner Bros previous biggest opening, The Matrix Reloaded which took £22 million. It is also expected to over take the large figures brought in by the previous four Potter films.
