The screenplay is based on Bernard Schlink's novel The Reader, focusing on teenage Michael's passionate affair with an older woman in Germany.
He later learns that she disappeared because she is the defendant in a war crimes trial.
Kidman will star opposite British actor Ralph Fiennes and it is the second collaboration she would have done with director Stephen Daldry, after he also made The Hours, which got her an Oscar.
