News of McAvoy starring the film follows reports that

The Last King of Scotland star is going to star in the role of Scotty, according to the Scottish Sunday Mirror.
Rumours claim that McAvoy will play a younger version of the character as the film will be a prequel, taking the characters back to the Starfleet Academy.
The eleventh movie in the franchise is scheduled for release at Christmas 2008, with JJ Abrams of Lost fame directing the film.
