The Brokeback Mountain director has claimed that although the movie is "not pornography", that is it is "unsuitable for children".
Lust, Caution will be released in the US in a month with a NC-17 certificate, which the director commented was a "respectable category".
However, according to Screen Daily, the sex scenes will be removed from the film for screenings in China.
Ang Lee's movie is based around the Eileen Chang novella, which follows the story of a woman embroiled in a plan to woo and murder a married enemy collaborator.
