Gulag film leads Raindance nominations
Published Thursday, Sep 27 2007, 16:20 BST | By Nick Levine
A film about one man's escape from a Russian Gulag will be the only British feature to compete for the Best Documentary prize at this year's Raindance Film Festival.
Stuart Urban, the director of cult 1997 comedy Preaching To The Perverted, spent 15 years investigating his father's adventures in wartime Russia for Tovarisch, his first documentary feature.
Garri S. Urban, a Polish doctor, managed to escape from a Gulag, or Russian prison camp, twice during World War Two. Tovarisch follows his painful return to Eastern Europe after the Soviet Union crumbled in 1992.
Tovarisch will compete against four US features for the Best Documentary prize, which will be announced in a ceremony at London's Cineworld Haymarket on October 7.
