Figures released by the Film Distributors' Association show there were 50.8 million cinema visits between June and August - the highest in 40 years.
It is a 25% increase on average summers. Another factor highlighted was the arrival of several much-awaited sequels.
The most popular film was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It was followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, The Simpsons Movie, Shrek the Third and Spider-Man 3.
The FDA said in a statement: "The fact that it was the wettest summer across the whole UK since records began and the coldest August for more than ten years naturally drove people to seek indoor entertainment."
The 12 most popular films during the summer months together took £305 million in the UK.
