Filmmaker David Lynch has been made an Officer in France's Legion of Honour.

The Mulholland Drive director was upgraded from the rank of Knight, which he received in 2002.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy called Lynch a "genius" and a "profoundly normal guy" at the ceremony, saying: "What is really strange is that people think you are a very original guy. What's crazy is life, not the perspective that you bring to life."

Lynch replied: "My French is poor, but my heart is rich today thanks to you...It's no secret that I love France, the art-making, art-loving and art-supporting people of France."

The 61-year-old has worked as a director, writer, producer, actor, cinematographer and composer since his first feature film Eraserhead in 1977. He received Oscar nominations for The Elephant Man, Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet, and scored a cult hit with TV show Twin Peaks.

Lynch was joined at the presidential palace by his partner, actress Emily Stofle, as well as director Roman Polanski and actress Charlotte Rampling.
