Actor Chris Pine has been confirmed as the new Captain Kirk in JJ Abrams' forthcoming Star Trek movie.
The 27-year-old pulled out of director Joe Carnahan's film White Jazz to "boldly go where no man has gone before".
He was rumoured to be torn between playing Kirk and starring as a hitman in the adaptation of the James Ellroy novel.
But Carnaghan confirmed that Pine had reached a decision, writing on his blog: "The young man playing Junior Stemmons has opted to 'go where no man has gone before', and thus had to bow out of White Jazz. I've been talking to him this past week and knew how tough the decision had to be for him."
He will join a cast that features Heroes star Zachary Quinto as Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Chekov, John Cho as Sulu and Zoe Saldana as Uhura. Eric Bana will play villain Nero, while Leonard Nimoy is also expected to appear in the movie, the eleventh big screen outing for the franchise.
Pine worked with Carnahan in Smokin' Aces, and has also played romantic leads in The Princess Diaries 2 and poorly-received Lindsay Lohan film Just My Luck.
