Urban will play the Starship Enterprise's medical officer, Leonard 'Bones' McCoy. Last week it was revealed that Simon Pegg, Eric Bana and John Cho had also joined the cast.
Chris Pine will play the young James T. Kirk, while Zoe Saldana will play a young Uhura, Anton Yelchin will star as Chekov and Zachary Quinto has agreed to take on the part of a young Spock.
Original Spock Leonard Nimoy will also feature in the film, which is due to start shooting next month.
New Zealand actor Urban has previously appeared in The Lord of the Rings, The Bourne Supremacy and Pathfinder.
