The actress was reportedly keen to star in the big-screen version of Nine, but director Rob Marshall felt she was not suited to the part.
A source said: "Katie desperately wanted to be in Nine. It would have taken her back to the singing and dancing she did when she was growing up. She thought working with Rob would be a career breakthrough. She was heartbroken when she didn't get the part."
The film, about the romantic entanglements of director Guido Contini, will star Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sophia Loren and Penelope Cruz.
Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Renée Zellweger and Dame Judi Dench have also been tipped to make an appearance.
