The Exorcist has topped a new poll to find the scariest film of all time.

Of more than 5,000 fans surveyed, one in five picked the 1973 film, followed by the Saw series and Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.

The top ten also included The Omen, Jaws and The Blair Witch Project.

Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Hannibal Lector was voted the most frightening movie villain in the MSN Movies poll, with the Alien creature coming in second.

Ripley in Alien, Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs and Chief Brody in Jaws were named top movie heroes.

John Williams' Jaws theme triumphed in the scariest horror music category.
