The role of Lavender Brown in the next Harry Potter film has been cast - to a 20-year-old actress.

Jessie Cave, who is about to appear in CBBC drama Summerhill and opposite Dame Helen Mirren in movie Inkheart, beat off the competition from thousands of teenagers to land the part.

Producers of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince advertised for girls aged between 15-18 to attend the open audition in July and said that "no acting experience" would be necessary, attracting around 7,000 hopefuls to try out for the role.

When director David Yates announced the open casting call, he said: "These auditions are open to everybody and we can’t wait to see who comes in the door.

"Normally I have all these casting agents sending me kids who have been to stage school and who come in tap-dancing and singing.

"What we are looking for is someone natural and absolutely credible in their own right."

But Cave, who is an experienced actress and two years above the requested age, will now play Ron Weasley's girlfriend Lavender, according to the BBC.

Lavender kisses Ron constantly and calls him 'Won Won', but he secretly wants to be with Emma Watson's character Hermione Granger.

An open audition was also called for the character of Tom Riddle, but it has not yet been announced who has been given the part.
