New Zealand star Karl Urban was thought to be taking on the role of Creed, who turns into Sabretooth, but he has dropped out of the lineup.
A source told CHUDD that the filmmakers are now asking 300 star Gerard Butler to take the part instead.
Director of the spin-off, Gavin Hood, has also asked Natalie Portman to take the part of Kayla in the movie.
Neither Butler or Portman have been confirmed for the film which is due for release in 2009.
