The Atonement actor was tipped to play the Nirvana frontman in the upcoming biopic based on Charles Cross' 2001 biography Heavier Than Heaven.
But McAvoy has dismissed the claims and said that he does not know "anything" about the film.
The Scottish star told MTV: "People have been saying that to me, but I haven't heard anything about it."
Cobain's widow Courtney Love will be the executive producer for the movie alongside her attorney Howard Weitzman, while Troy screenwriter David Benioff will write the script.
The Nirvana musician shot himself in the head in 1994.
