Some residents complained when Brooklyn Bridge and a number of streets in the city were closed for periods between October 2006 and April 2007 as the movie was filmed.
Smith said he was sorry at the drama's New York premiere, saying: "I would like to issue a public apology to the citizens of New York. There were a couple of streets we had to close off during the filming of I Am Legend.
"I am very sorry. People were kind of upset with me."
The film is an adaptation of Richard Matheson's classic science fiction novel of the same name. It tells the story of the lone human survivor in a post-apocalyptic USA, where the population has been turned into a form of vampires by a rogue virus.
Smith recently revealed that he wants to become president of the USA.
