Catholic Church slams 'Golden Compass'
Published Thursday, Dec 20 2007, 13:20 GMT | By Beth Hilton

Vatican newspaper l'Osservatore Romano claimed the movie, which also stars Daniel Craig, "promotes a cold and hopeless world without God".
It also criticised best-selling author Philip Pullman for writing fantasy book Northern Lights, on which the film is based.
The editorial called the seasonal offering "the most anti-Christmas film possible", adding that "honest" viewers would find it "devoid of any particular emotion apart from a great chill".
Director Chris Weitz took out all references to the Church from the movie in a bid to avoid offending religious viewers. However, leaders urged church-goers to boycott the finished product when it was released earlier this month.
The Golden Compass is currently at number one in the UK box office charts.
