Hardly a great year for quality movies, 2007 threw up plenty of mediocrity, with masterpieces a rarer occurrence than Britney Spears wearing a bra these days. Using Digital Spy's tried and tested star-rating system to pick out the cream of the cinematic crop, here's what we've come up with over the year. Digital Spy's Film Of The Year

Eastern Promises is an utterly engrossing film with magnificently understated performances from Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts, a compelling narrative detailing the atrocities faced by foreign sex slaves in London with some sublime direction by David Cronenberg. It also contains arguably the most visually brutal fight sequence ever, taking place in a Turkish baths of all places. Let's hope this great film batters the opposition at the Academy Awards.

A terrifying and allegorical concoction of blood-sucking thrills and moral complexities, this intelligent zombiefest devoured the supposed rule that horror movie sequels are never better than the original.

Inland Empire

Frustrating, alienating, baffling – but bloody marvellous – this David Lynch film feels like floating between the beautiful world of a dream to the terrifying realms of a nightmare.

3:10 To Yuma

Oozing with grit and testosterone, this intricately-structured Western remake pitched Christian Bale's skint family man against Russell Crowe's charismatic and complex outlaw – with a few stunning twists along the way.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut

"Too bad she won't live, but then again, who does?" Unlike the doomed replicants, Ridley Scott's masterpiece will live forever and was given another cinematic outing with very minor alterations.

Notable films that fell just short of a hysterically positive review include Notes On A Scandal, Hairspray, The Simpsons Movie, Bridge to Terabithia, Brick Lane, American Gangster and Sunshine.
