The Pan's Labyrinth director said he would like to work on the seventh film in the wizard franchise as he is a big fan of JK Rowling's book.
He told MTV News: "I got [Deathly Hallows] for my daughter and she was like 'When are you going to give it to me?'
"I read it and I was very moved by the ending. It ends very much like a Dickens novel."
Del Toro, who unsuccessfully applied to direct the third Potter film, said he liked the "darker" tone of the last novel in the series.
He explained: "They have a contrast between the gloomy existence of the kid and the world he's exposed to. [It has] evolved into a really nice universe."
Del Toro recently announced that he plans to helm a remake of Frankenstein. He was also rumoured to be directing a big-screen version of cult '60s sci-fi series The Champions.
