Tom Hanks has expressed his disappointment at the cancellation of this year's Golden Globes ceremony.

The actor, who is nominated for his role in Charlie Wilson's War, said the event was among his favourite in Hollywood.

He said: "It's a shame, the Globes are one of the best bashes. They ply you with food and really nice champagne. I was always satisfied with a little tipple, and you get to catch up with loads of friends."

The January 13 ceremony will be replaced with an hour-long press conference after nominees refused to cross WGA picket lines outside the Beverly Hilton.

Hanks recently revealed that he is a supporter of Aston Villa Football Club.
