Ricky Gervais slams UK film industry

Ricky Gervais has revealed that he refused movie roles on his home soil because he is not impressed with the UK film industry.

The comedian, who scooped the Best Television Comedy award for Extras at Sunday's Golden Globes, said he has more respect for US cinema.

He said: "I was offered all kinds of films. Half of them were English so that's a no. The English just aren't good at making films.

"It goes from gritty gangster films to everyone acting like something out of Jane Eyre. I don't want to be a part of those things."

He also criticised the calibre of celebrities in the UK, saying: "There are loads of awful TV actors - we've only got about three real film stars. And we are riddled with people you see popping up on UK Gold or The Graham Norton Show or coming out of a club pissed."
