Lake shot to fame playing Tracy Turnblad in the 1988 version of the musical, the role taken by newcomer Blonsky in last year's remake.
She told New York Post gossip column PageSix: "I just adore her. She's so great in the film, and I'm entering into a whole new phase now, it's so interesting to see her launch."
Lake, who hosted a successful talkshow in the US for nine years, is currently promoting her documentary The Business of Being Born, an exposé of delivery rooms in the US.
Blonsky, 19, missed out on the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy at last night's Golden Globes, losing out to Marion Cotillard of La Vie en Rose.
