Academy Award nominations announced

'No Country for Old Men'

No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood have received eight nominations for the 80th annual Academy Awards.

They face Atonement and Michael Clayton for Best Picture, both of which scored seven nods each.

Teen drama Juno completes the category, while star Ellen Page is up against Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth: The Golden Age); Julie Christie (Away from Her), Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) and Laura Linney (The Savages) for Best Actress.

Blanchett's turn as Bob Dylan in I'm Not There also scored her a Best Supporting Actress nomination and she will make Oscar history if she scoops both awards on the night.

The shortlist for Best Actor features George Clooney (Michael Clayton); Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood); Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street); Tommy Lee Jones (In the Valley of Elah) and Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises).

No Country for Old Men directors Ethan and Joel Coen are up for the Best Director gong alongside Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood), Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton), Jason Reitman (Juno) and Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly).

The awards will be handed out at a ceremony at LA's Kodak Theatre on February 24.

Oscars producer Gil Cates has confirmed that the show will go ahead as planned, despite ongoing difficulties related to the Writers Guild of America strike.
