The film, starring Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones and Javier Bardem, was competing against titles such as Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood and Sean Penn-directed Into the Wild.
Elsewhere, Yves Simoneau won best director for a television film for Bury My Heart on Wounded Knee and Barry Sonnenfeld took the television comedy title for a Pushing Daisies episode.
Glenn P Weiss won the musical variety category with The 61st Annual Tony Awards; reality went to Bertram Van Munster for The Amazing Race; Paul Hoen took children's programmes for Jump In; and Larry Carpenter's One Life to Live won daytime serials.
The DGA awards are never televised so were not affected by the Writers Guild of America strike.
