The Dreamgirls star will appear alongside Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright and Cedric the Entertainer in the movie, to be directed by Darnell Martin.
Brody will play the founder of infamous blues label Chess Records, Leonard Chess, after Matt Dillon dropped out of the role over a conflict in schedules.
Shooting for the 1950s-set film is due to start in March in Mississippi and New Jersey.
