As previously reported, Rush Hour and Red Dragon director Brett Ratner has been in talks with Universal Pictures over the film, which will be a remake of Curt Siodmak's 1941 classic.
However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Frank Darabont, James Mangold and Joe Johnston are also being lined up to take the helm.
Darabont is best known for directing The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, which were both nominated for Academy Awards.
Mangold is most famous for his work on 3:10 To Yuma and Walk The Line, while Johnston is known for his focus on adventure movies, after directing Jurassic Park III and Jumanji.
Mark Romanek had originally been named as the movie's director, but he pulled out weeks before filming was due to begin.
