'Pushing Daisies'
Directed by Brad Siberling, the movie is an adaptation of Sid and Marty Krofft's 1970s live-action children's show.
Ferrell will star as a paleontologist who ends up in a strange prehistoric world, while Friel will play his love interest, claims The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie was written before the Writers Guild of America strike.
Friel, who will next appear in cinemas in Goal III, landed a Golden Globe nomination earlier this year for her performance in Pushing Daisies.
