Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has reportedly sparked complaints after cinema-goers said they were not aware that it was a musical.
The trailer for the Tim Burton-directed film did not feature any singing, leading some movie fans to believe they were paying to watch a straight horror movie.
Trading Standards and the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) have reportedly received a number of complaints that the movie's advertising campaign was misleading.
Filmstalker website boss Richard Brunton said: "When the UK trailer came out there was nothing in it that pointed it out to be a musical.
"I would say the advertising has been blatantly misleading and I assume that the feeling was that less people would pay to see a musical so it would be better to sell it as a horror movie."
Campaign group Stop Crude Advertising Material in Public (SCAMP) has also complained that the film's poster glorifies violence by showing star Johnny Depp brandishing a razor.
