Martin Scorsese's Rolling Stones documentary Shine a Light has opened the Berlin Film Festival.

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts joined Scorsese to launch the film, which shows the band in concert at New York's Beacon Theatre in 2006.

Jagger said it was "a great honour" to open the 11-day event, during which 21 films will compete for the coveted Golden Bear award.

Richards said of the movie: "This is me doing my thing and thank God Martin wanted to capture it. I had no idea the cameras were on. I just did my thing."

Scorsese claimed the group's music had inspired him "constantly throughout the years", saying: "Whenever I saw the show I'd get excited - I wanted to get a camera up there. We tried to get as close as possible to the energy of a live concert."

The Oscar-winning director recently announced that his next documentary will be about reggae legend Bob Marley.

Movies in contention for the Golden Bear include Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood and Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky. Films about singer Patti Smith and band Gorillaz will also be shown.

Shine a Light, which is not in the competition, is scheduled for release in the UK on April 11.
