Rex Features

Star Wars will return to cinemas this August in an animated movie titled Star Wars: The Clone Wars, reports Variety.

The 100-minute feature will take place between the events of Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith and include characters from the prequel franchise such as Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padmé Amidala.

The story will then switch to television with 30-minute "mini-movies" that will premiere on Cartoon Network.

"I felt there were a lot more Star Wars stories left to tell," said creator George Lucas in a press release.

"I was eager to start telling some of them through animation and, at the same time, push the art of animation forward."

Lucas will oversee production of the film and television series which will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars will debut in theatres on August 15.
