Baz Luhrmann's film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet has been voted the best love film of all time by customers and staff of HMV stores.

The 1996 film, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, beat classic '40s film Casablanca to the top spot.

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan rom-com Sleepless in Seattle came in third place with Titanic and Dirty Dancing completing the top five.

Luhrmann's colourful musical Moulin Rouge! also appeared in the HMV poll.

British films Brief Encounter, Love Actually, Notting Hill and last year's Atonement all featured in the top 20.
