The Oscar-winning actor, 67, agreed to star opposite 007 Daniel Craig following secret talks in LA.
According to The Mirror, he will play the head of the international terrorist organisation featured in previous film Casino Royale.
An insider said: "It's not a major role but it's an extremely important one. It will be a brief onscreen appearance.
"Everyone is really excited at the prospect of having such a huge star joining the cast. It will be fabulous to see him square up against Bond."
The Godfather star is expected to visit the UK to film his role in April or May.
The 22nd instalment of the spy franchise is currently shooting at Pinewood Studios and is scheduled for release later this year.
