The 31-year-old said she was inspired by fellow actress Sarah Polley, who made her directorial debut with acclaimed movie Away From Her.
The film earned veteran star Julie Christie an Oscar nomination for her role as a woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
Witherspoon, who has produced three movies, said she now wants to follow in Polley's footsteps.
She explained: "I'm inching toward directing, I have to say. Be very afraid. I'm tackling that next, but it's very inspiring to see Sarah Polley, who I used to audition with, direct Julie Christie hopefully to an Oscar. I think that's really inspiring."
She added that she would also like to play a part similar to Angelina Jolie's in Mr. And Mrs. Smith, saying: "I'd love a kick-ass female role, where I get to shoot somebody in the neck or the knee - nothing permanent."
