An action figure depicting Heath Ledger in the role of The Joker is to go on sale.

The 28-year-old had just finished shooting Batman movie The Dark Knight when he died of an overdose of prescription drugs on January 22.

His family has given its blessing for the character to be included in a range of figures from toy company Mattel to coincide with the film's release.

A Joker armed with a rocket launcher and another with a knife will be available from May.

A spokesman for Ledger's relatives said: "Heath was very proud of his work in the film and his family is aware and supportive of the plans for the movie."

Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell will reportedly complement the actor in Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus.
