Actor Taylor Kitsch has been cast as Gambit in X-Men spin-off movie Wolverine, according to Superhero Hype!.

The 26-year-old, who stars as Tim Riggins in US show Friday Night Lights, will play Gambit (also known as Remy LeBeau), a superhero with the ability to charge objects with energy.

Kitsch will join Hugh Jackman (playing Wolverine for the fourth time), Liev Schreiber (Sabretooth), Danny Huston (William Stryker) and Lynn Collins (Silver Fox) in the cast.

The film has been subject to recent controversy after using the Queenstown Fun Centre in New Zealand to house explosives.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine opens on May 1 next year.
