10,000 B.C. director Roland Emmerich will make apocalyptic blockbuster 2012 his next film, reports Variety.

Emmerich co-wrote the script with Harald Kloser and every major Hollywood studio has indicated an interest in the project.

The studios will bid on the film and, pending a lengthy Actors Guild strike, Emmerich will direct the movie for a summer 2009 release.

No plot details have been revealed but the Mayan Calendar claims the year 2012 will be a time of transformation and a change in world order. NASA scientists also predict the sun will reverse its magnetic poles in 2012.

Emmerich has previously directed Independence Day, Godzilla and The Day After Tomorrow.

His next film, 10,000 B.C., is released on March 14.
