Shrek and sidekick Donkey have finished joint first in a poll to find the best movie couple.

The characters, voiced by Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy, have appeared in three films in the hit animated franchise.

They tied with Pretty Woman stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere for the top spot in the survey by UK Cinema Industry.

Dirty Dancing's Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey came in joint third with Homer and Marge from last year's The Simpsons Movie.

Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal also finished in the top ten for their portrayal of gay cowboys in 2005 drama Brokeback Mountain, while Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader were recognised for their turn in 2002's cult hit Secretary.

UK Cinema Industry representative Grace Carley said: "It's an unusual choice. Shrek and Donkey are not even human."
