The actor-turned-director and his business partner Bruce Davey acquired the Dendy Cinema chain and distribution business after a long takeover battle.
Entertainment company Becker Group confirmed on Friday that it had sold Dendy, known for screening art-house films, to Gibson's firm Icon Film Distribution.
A spokesperson said: "Icon was selected based on various parameters including value, timing and transaction certainty."
Dendy operates theatres in major Australian cities Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra.
The co-writer of The Passion of the Christ recently sued Gibson for allegedly deceiving him over the film's scale.
