American Idol's Fantasia Barrino is collaborating with Oprah Winfrey on a film version of Broadway musical The Colour Purple.
"That’s going to happen and I’m going to do it," Barrino told MTV.
The musical is based on Steven Spielberg's 1985 movie The Colour Purple, which starred Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey. The film was famously nominated for 11 Academy Awards but lost out in every category.
Fantasia, who recently ended her stint playing Celie in the stage version, said she'll make the movie after recording a new album.
"We haven’t started yet because I’m going to work on my album. I think it’s fair that I committed myself, and promised that after I finish going on a tour, I’ll be ready to come back and commit myself to Miss Celie again."
Fantasia admitted she is thrilled to be working with Winfrey, adding: "They [the producers] are going to work with me. They don’t have to [but] that’s a favour. Working with someone like Miss Oprah who’s so talented and amazing - it’s a blessing."
The Colour Purple will join The Producers and Hairspray in the list of films that have made the transition to stage, then back to screen again.
