The film will tell the story of the Great Earthquake that devastated San Francisco at the beginning of the 20th Century, reports Empire.
Bird, who helmed The Incredibles and Ratatouille, has experience of live-action movies from working on Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories in 1987.
The director is using a script from John Logan that focuses around a student who discovers a conspiracy that reveals San Francisco is at risk from fire if an earthquake ever hits the city.
No fixed date has been agreed for the movie's release or the beginning of shooting.
