The film's producer Michael De Luca told ComingSoon.net that he hoped to meet with Wimmer soon to discuss working on the feature.
Fans of the game franchise have long felt Wimmer should direct the film based on his previous feature Equilibrium, the Christian Bale sci-fi action thriller.
Wimmer has also directed Ultraviolet. The Metal Gear Solid film is set up at Columbia Pictures.
The game series began in 1987 and spawned six sequels - the latest of which, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is due out on the PlayStation 3 this summer.
The Konami game's protagonist is special forces operative Solid Snake who is often sent on missions to disarm the Metal Gear bipedal nuclear weapon.
