The Virgin Comics series, which Jackman will co-write with Eli Stone's Marc Guggenheim, centres on a futuristic world where privacy has been traded for safety. Jackman will play the film's protagonist, a role similar to Will Smith's character in I Am Legend.
Speaking to Variety, Jackman's producing partner John Palermo said: "This is our first comic, and we feel the concept is transferable to other arenas, perhaps first as a video game, and then a movie."
Jackman added: "I've had so much fun in the graphic novel world with the X-Men franchise that I wanted to get even more involved. I'm excited to work with Virgin and Marc and create a compelling character and story that hopefully will also make it to the big screen."
Virgin has also announced potential comic book film deals with Jonathan Mostow (for The Megas), Guy Ritchie (The Gamekeeper) and John Woo (Seven Brothers).
Jackman's upcoming movies include Deception and Baz Luhrman's Australia. He recently signed on to star in Neil Marshall's Drive.
