It will be based on the book The Man Who Invented Fidel: Castro, Cuba And Herbert Matthews by New York Times writer Anthony DePalma.
Moxie Pictures has acquired the rights to the book, which looks at how Matthews's portrayal of the revolutionary as a heroic figure paved the way for his rise to power in Cuba in the late '50s.
The respected foreign correspondent was the first American reporter to interview Castro, who was thought to be dead before he was tracked down in the Sierra Maestra mountains in 1957.
However, Matthews became a journalistic pariah and was accused of betraying his country when Castro was later revealed to be a Soviet-backed dictator.
