Hollywood actor Richard Widmark has died at the age of 93.

He passed away on Monday at his home in the US state of Connecticut, his wife Susan Blanchard confirmed.

She said he had recently fractured a vertebra and his condition had worsened, adding: "He was a very private man."

Widmark was best known for playing villains and was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his turn as psychopath Tommy Udo in the 1947 gangster classic Kiss Of Death.

His other credits include Pickup on South Street, Two Rode Together, How the West Was Won and The Alamo.

He appeared in TV series Madigan in the early '70s, based on the acclaimed 1968 movie in which he also starred.

Widmark is survived by his wife and daughter Ann from his first marriage to late writer Jean Hazelwood.
