Michael Dougherty will co-write and direct the animated sci-fi adventure Calling All Robots for Walt Disney Pictures.
The film will be similar in style to Robert Zemeckis's Beowulf, which utilises performance capture technology to scan an actor's movements into a computer and create digital characters and sets.
The director told Variety: "It's a film we just could not make in live action or traditional animation."
Dougherty, who recently directed horror film Trick 'r Treat, will write the film with Breehn Burns and Simeon Wilkins.
He revealed that Calling All Robots is inspired by Japanese monster films, saying: "I grew up watching Godzilla movies. This film is very much rooted in those movies."
