Ice Cube is to star in and produce new movie Janky Promoters.
The film is based on the rapper's own script about a pair of music promoters who find themselves out of their depth when they book a top hip-hop star into a mid-sized California venue.
The Dimension Films project will see a return to an R rating after his recent family-friendly comedy Are We There Yet?
Studio boss Harvey Weinstein said: "This feels a lot like Uptown Saturday Night to me, a caper film where you have these music promoters who are slightly shady but are good enough guys that you root for them. This is going to be R-rated and it appeals right to the core of Cube's audience."
Janky Promoters is the star's first screenplay since the third instalment of his Friday trilogy in 2002. He will co-produce with Matt Alvarez, his partner in his Cube Vision firm.
The movie is scheduled to begin shooting in early summer.
Ice Cube recently said he would be interested in playing B.A. Baracus in the new A-Team film.
