Writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio and producer Jerry Bruckheimer will bring The Lone Ranger to the big screen for Disney, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The character is a masked Texas Ranger who fights injustice in America's Old West with the help of side-kick Tonto and his faithful horse Silver.

The Lone Ranger, known for his "Hi-Yo Silver, away!" exclamation, first appeared in a radio show in the '30s which spun off into movies, TV shows, comic books and toys.

The most recent movie, 1981's The Legend of the Lone Ranger, was such a failure that it ended the Hollywood career of Klinton Spilsbury, who was making his acting debut.

Writers Rossie and Elliott are experienced in reviving dormant franchises. They penned the script for The Mask of Zorro and, along with producer Bruckheimer, turned the theme park ride Pirates of the Caribbean into a hit film franchise.
