Warner Bros has bought the rights to the science fiction book series Hyperion Cantos, The Hollywood Reporter says.
Trevor Sands has been hired to write the screenplay and will combine the first two novels, Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion, into one film. The Departed producer Graham King will oversee the film.
The books revolve around a war in space, with the bulk of action taking place on the planet Hyperion. The first novel won a Hugo Award in 1990 while its follow-up was nominated for a Nebula Award.
Sands has previously worked for Dimension Films on the unproduced script Six Billion Dollar Man, an updated version of the '70s TV series.
