The film is based on the 1982 musical that shows Italian film director Federico Fellini trying to meet the demands of the women in his life. The musical was itself adapted from Fellini's memoir 8 1/2.
The Weinstein Company film was shelved when the late Anthony Minghella didn't have enough time to complete a script rewrite before the WGA strike. A new draft is being penned along with work to fine-tune Maury Yeston's music and lyrics and the film's choreography.
The Nine cast currently includes Javier Bardem, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz and Sophia Loren.
