Published Monday, Apr 7 2008, 15:47 BST | By Beth Hilton
From his debut in a silent amateur production of Peer Gynt as a teenager, Charlton Heston seemed destined to become a screen icon. He made his name in the '50s playing heroic roles in films such as The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur, but showed his versatility by donning a loin cloth and locking lips with a monkey in Planet Of The Apes.
Later he became known for his political activism and campaigns against gun control, as well as his star turn in TV's Dynasty spin-off The Colbys.
